Most grass should be cut at 3 - 3 1/2 inches tall. You should never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade off! This could damage your lawn.

Is it ok to have thatch? If so, how much is ok?
A small amount of thatch can actually protect your lawn during the hot summer months. It is recommended that you should not have more than 1/2 inch of thatch. More than 1/2 inch of thatch is unhealthy and can be a breeding ground for harmful pests and disease. To decrease thatch, core aeration is highly recommended!
